"Thurgon, unhand her Lady Vaenys, now." Illora stepped in, her tone and eyes sharper than swords. The former mercenary stared at the High Priestess for a couple heartbeats in defiance, but soon enough obeyed. Even after his had was gone, Micaela could still feel tingling burning sensation on where he had touched her.
"Why should I tell you, Dragon Lady? So you could run into his arms and become his mistress of Darkness?!" He continued. "So much power he commands, it's easy to become seduced by his bestial ways. I, Thurgon, have resisted him but you will not. You will fall to his madness as have Baelor and the Natives. And if you do, I will burn you along with all of them..."
"Enough, Thurgon." Illora's open hand flew across Thurgon's face. The High Priestess was sweating, her eyes burning with rage. "You seem to have forgotten your way, this is not how you treat a Lady. You will do none of those things and you will speak no more in the Lady's presence."

Micaela bit her lip. She was shaken by the man's words even though she believed absolutely that she would resist the madness he spoke of. She smiled at Ilora. "Thank you," she whispered, not having realised, until that moment, just how unsettled she was. "He speaks of Baelor Golareon. My friends and I would like to know the truth about Lord Baelor's disappearance...one day. Perhaps I should have spoken more delicately, but I've always been dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge...and truth."

"It's not a matter of delicacy, my dear." Illora spoke as Thurgon backed away into his Chambers. "Thurgon has grown ever more 'faithful' since his arrival, he sees the Darkness creeping around every corner and has vowed to see the whole of it destroyed. He is a man with a hammer who see all of us as nails."
I do not condone his methods, but my superiors in Volantis have not given me the permission to dismiss him." She shook her head sadly. "Despite my earnings, they think that if they can keep the mad dog on a leash they can teach it to guard the house."
"Baelor Golareon is a whole other matter. Since Thurgon returned I have probed him on the subject, he has never given me, not anyone else, an answer clearer than 'the Jungle took him' or 'the Dark God got to him'. Whatever that means, I cannot claim that I know it."

Micaela sighed. "That is unfortunate, my lady. It would be hugely beneficial to myself, and the Geographic Society, if we could learn more about the events that took place within the jungle. I am sorry if I caused Thurgon distress, but is there nothing that you think might reach him? Some way to persuade him that I am not a threat? After all, the more we learn about the dangers of the jungle, the better we can prepare for them, for ourselves and for the colony as a whole."
Her face was earnest. "I won't deny that I'm hoping to gain a little prestige by learning something useful in the jungle, and of course I want to see the Society prosper, as well, but I truly believe that knowledge benefits mankind."

"You don't understand, my lady. You do not cause Thurgon distress, neither he sees you as a threat. If anything, he is the threat here." Illora said somberly, she lead Micaela by the hand across the Temple, back to the entrance.
"I fear you won't be able to take anything away from Thurgon, for I do believe not even he knows what he has seen... As if his mind is trying to suppress something that caused him too much pain." She thought for a moment. "I have heard of ancient Valyrian spells that allows to probes ones mind with Glass Candles, but alas, those are far beyond my knowledge."

The priestess' words disappointed Micaela and she fought to conceal her feelings.
"I'm afraid I don't know anything about glass candles, nor Valyrian spells. Sorcery has never been one of my personal areas of interest, but I would be happy to research the matter, if you think it helpful? Will you let me know if any other men who were part of the expedition happen to visit the temple, and let me meet them? I'd be most grateful."

"If you find any book on the matter, or if your research seem to stagnate, I'd be glad to help you with it. You can come here whenever you want and I'll be always at your service, my lady."

Micaela eased gently away. She didn't like being touched against her will. She smiled at Illora. "I'll remember that," she vowed. "You've been most kind to me, and I shall remember that too. I hope the Lord of Light keeps you safe." It felt like the right thing to say.
